6th East African Conference on Communication Disability: 22nd to 24th October 2015

The 6th East African Conference on Communication Disability is a bi-annual conference that brings together international and regional clinicians, researchers, related health professionals and parents to share their work and develop the emerging speech and language therapy profession in East Africa. The 2015 conference will be held in Arusha, Tanzania on 22nd to 24th October 2015 with the theme:

“Communication Disability in East Africa: Development-Treatment-Inclusion.”

There will be also “Pre-conference” on 19th to 20th October, 2015 at Sebastian Kolowa Memorial University in Lushoto, Tanzania which will include practical workshops. During these workshops, the speech and language therapists at the university are expected to offer various services to people with speech and language disorders in the community.

Please plan to attend! There will be a call for papers as soon as it is released. If you are working/volunteering on the continent, or would like to get involved in work in Sub-Saharan Africa this is a great conference for networking with people and projects.

CPD Event! 17th November 2014

ASLTK will be hosting its 3rd CPD Event for 2014.

Topics:

  • Autism, behaviour and simple strategies to use in your everyday practice:  Applied Behavioural Analysis or ABA is a popular approach for treating children with Autism.  The principles in ABA are not only simple, but can also be used in many areas of your practice everyday!  We will spend time discussing ABA, behavioural modification and therapy principles you can incorporate into your everyday practice to provide your clients a positive and motivating, although challenging, environment to grow, learn and improve their speech and language skills. Presented by Woody Rule (Speech and Language Therapist)
  • Evaluation and Intervention for children with Cleft Palate: The speech production of children with cleft palate is one of the most unique in the field of speech language therapy. This interactive session will address the basics to evaluate and provide evidence-based therapy for children with cleft palate, especially in places with limited technology. Presented by Courtney Bell (Speech and Language Therapist)
  • Interactive session on Solution Focused Practice (SFP): SFP is an approach to talking therapy which focuses on what the client wants, and their existing strengths and resources.  It was originally developed in the US in the field of family therapy, but is now being used increasingly in a range of disciplines such as social work, education, counselling, medicine, OT, education, supervision, management and of course SLT. Presented by Emma Osei-Mensah (Speech and Language Therapist)

CPD event: Peadiatric Dysphagia & Nairobi Monthly Meeting

Description: management of paediatric dysphagia including behaviour related feeding difficulties. Members to please bring case studies.

Location: private residence, Westlands, Nairobi

Beverages and Food: tea/coffee and biscuits will be provided. Please bring sandwich fillers (cheese, ham, etc.) and other snacks (fruit, crisps, cake) for a bring and share lunch. Bread will be provided.

Fee: This event is open to ASLTK members and non-members. Fully paid up ASLTK members may attend free of charge. Non-members will be required to pay a fee of KES1000 to attend.

Please note the Nairobi Monthly meeting will take place at 12:00 following the presentation and discussions. Certificates of membership will be handed out to members who have paid their fees as well as provided all the relevant supporting documentation!
